ISTD - initial research - lookbooks

COS

Collection Of Style is for men and women who want high end design and good quality at an affordable price. They tend to favour style over fashion and appreciate timeless design that 'lives beyond the season'. COS likes functional design crafted from simple ideas, which is definitely reflected in their lookbook. There is very little text within the publication, it is mainly image based, with a clean and simple aesthetic. It's very smart which reflects the clothing line, and the packaging makes the design very distinctive and memorable.

The use of black and white image and a simple colour is extremely effective within this design. It doesn't take anything away from the clothing, but instead adds to it. The colour is used to frame important pieces, reflecting the style of the designers. Depending on my chosen blogger, using desaturated images is a possibility, however, there are a number of bloggers where doing this would not be appropriate. Love Aesthetics for example tends to use a lot of black and white photographs anyway, favouring monochrome pieces, whereas Jane Aldridge from Sea of Shoes is a very bright, colourful and contrasting character.

The binding technique of this lookbook is a nice contrast to the clean black and white images inside. It makes it a lot more personal and it is an effective way of binding together pages of different sizes. The use of embossing on the cover also make it a very distinctive piece of design. This is a process that I'm interested in including within my project.

The format of this lookbook is an interesting one. The square design make its unique, allowing for the use of framed images. By using only a small amount of text, all focus is on the image, which is important in terms of fashion design and selling products. This is a very clean and professional looking publication, however, I'm uncertain as to how well the use of the coloured product works.

A very luxurious piece of design with a special finish. The stark and clean appearance of the white compliments the gold perfectly, creating individual lookbook cards within a solid box. Once removed, a pattern inside the packaging is revealed, which is a very nice touch. It's little things like that that really interest me within design.

The use of limited colour avoids any sort of sudden contrasts within this publication. Simplicity is key, and the use of more than one image on a page allows for a range of products to be shown.

This is an extremely quirky design, which makes the most out of the images it includes. It's interseting to see something a bit different within a lookbook, there's still very little content, but the images have been experimented with and it seems a lot more playful. The brand is represented very well, and you are able to get a feel for what it is like.

Fascinating use of type and image, combining both to create interesting visuals on each page. The visuals are almost 'cut and paste', with an effective us of layering.

This is the only lookbook I found that made us of quite a lot of text. It was almost explored more than image. In some places I feel the content get a bit lost due to pt size, and my eyes just begin to wonder back to the image. Sometimes the image says enough by itself.
