WHAT IS A LINE - collage research

For this project, the like chosen was 'collage'. You can create some visually beautiful design whilst working with found image and found objects. By assembling a selection of images in a certain way, a whole new meaning can be formed.
The great thing about collage is that you can incorporate just about anything - as a hoarder, this is ideal.  The final images created can sometimes be quite ambiguous, which is what is quite fascinating about collage.  There is something extremely appealing about things that are obviously created by hand, things that have been scanned in over and over, cut out, re-shaped.
It will also be a nice experience to mix type with image of this nature.

A Tate definition of collage:

Collage is a term used to describe both the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other ephemera are arranged and stuck down to a supporting surface. Collage can also include other media such as painting and drawing, and contain three-dimensional elements. The term collage derives from the French wordspapiers collés or découpage, used to describe techniques of pasting paper cut-outs onto various surfaces. It was first used as an artists' technique in the twentieth century.

Brandi Strickland

Brandi Strickland is an artist I have been familiar with for a while now, and after the 'blind date' workshop with Jo, quite a lot of others became interested in her work also.
A combination of hand-cut collage, painting and drawing is used throughout her work, creating stunning compositions, 'from simple and impactful to sweepingly ambitious and hyper-detailed'.
Strickland manipulates found objects in such a way that they can sometimes become unrecognisable, taking on a whole new story.
Narrative is continuously displayed, with a keen focus on 'incarnation, ascension, love, struggle, disasters, initiations, illuminations, transitions, celebrations, separations, epic journeys, and long-awaited arrivals'. It's quite interesting to think that something like collage can depict such themes.
