Range of cards

The brief suggested a number of shops to take a look at in terms of getting a good idea of the range of cards that are currently available. Paperchase has always been a favourite of mine. Although many of the cards can be quite expensive, Paperchase offers unique and handcrafted designs, with a variety of different finishes. Sometimes it is better to pay more for quality, however this may depend on the recipient.

Age
The use of hand rendered type can be seen throughout a large number of Paperchase cards. This adds an extra dimension, making the card more special and playful. The use of two colours would allow the recipient to be either male or female, and the design would appeal to the age stated. The use of abbreviations is something that would also appeal to the target audience.
Fluorescent Mexican birthday card that comes with an interesting 3D attachment. The design is suitable for the age it is intended for, and has an interesting screen printed effect.
Further use of hand drawn type, displaying how effective it can be despite it being quite simple. Sometimes a simple design can be much more effective than a whole load of decoration.

Birthday
A fun card with glitter decoration and paper heart attachment and yellow stripe envelope. The front also has a cut out slot so that the inside message can be read from the outside. This is an extremely sweet card that makes something quite simple into a fun and interesting design.
This is a card that I personally purchased for a relative. It features intricate laser cut, as well as 3D butterflies and use of glitter decoration. It is a lovely design and it's features make it worth it's price.
Pop out card with glitter decoration that is ideal for the younger generation. Kids don't really take too much notice of cards when there isn't some sort of interaction. By including pop outs and further decoration, it forces the user to play about with the card, heightening interest.
A fun, pop up birthday card that includes honeycomb decoration when opened up. This is ideal for kids, as it allows them to interact and play with the card, giving it more purpose. Children are much more focused on the presents, therefore by making the card into something that can be displayed for a long time, their interest in the product is heightened.

3D effect birthday card complete with 3D viewing glasses. This card is printed on FSC approved board. This allows for interaction and allows the product to become more of a keepsake that simply something that is displayed for a few days.

Mother's Day
Another laser cut design that features a pattern insert so that it is visible through the cut out spaces.
Paperchase offer a variety of light hearted and humorous cards, depending on the occasion. Sometimes it can be nice to send a 'funny' card, as it can cause a reaction from the recipient. It can also make the product memorable, and may cause the recipient to purchase something similar.
Use of vintage imagery which creates a fun and quirky product.

Thank You
Thank you cards are usually quite special as the message itself is an important one. These cards above hold an intricate and extremely delicate design that comes with a matching envelope. The design therefore reflects the cards content, offering a unique format.
Use of watercolour design in a variety of aesthetically pleasing colours, with handwriting which compliments the overall appearance.

Design that makes the most of laser cut by allowing a bright colour to shine through that has a lot of impact.
Two examples of how effective simple hand drawn text can be. Sometimes it's easy to get the message across in a way that isn't overly complicated and isn't too serious. There are different things to be thankful for and therefore there need to be different designs available.

Anniversary
A design displaying how the envelope can compliment the rest of the design. Sometimes the envelope can be just as important as the card itself.
A simple design but a very effective use of colours that are relevant to it's message.

Congrats

A card that makes use of both pattern and honeycomb decoration. Honeycomb is ideal for both special occasions and for appealing to the younger audience, creating a reaction.
Use of hand crafter woollen imagery that creates a light hearted and special design.
Use of pattern and colour to build up a bright and colour design. Looks extremely playful and handcrafted. This sort of style works well with the brown stock used alongside it.
An interesting take on a card, using the outside of an envelope on the inside in order to the get the message across. Content matches it's context well.

Wedding/Engagement
Use of illustration and humour to create a different type of aesthetic that is quite different from the usual Paperchase visuals. A very sweet design that is personal and appears hand crafted.

Different format possibilities that are available for cards, using the honeycomb decoration. Special appearance for a special occasion that allows the user to interact, becoming a keepsake and a reminder of the event.
Illustration that uses candy colours and hand rendered type. Colours works extremely well against the white background, allowing the image to stand out.
A humorous version of an engagement card, for those who aren't so serious. Allows men to find something that appeals to them, instead of just pink, illustrative designs.
Use of actual objects within the design, which makes the card a lot more special and also adds cost to the product.

New baby/Christening
Screen print used to create a playful effect, perfect for it's content. Colours are also extremely appropriate, as is the imagery used, which looks effective placed on a white background.

Use of vector images against a solid colour background. This is something that I would like to look at as I find it extremely effective. The colour choice is extremely important, as is the choice of objects included.

Get Well
Notecard boxes

As I have to design a minimum of four cards, I want to produce some designs that will work individually and as a set. Therefore I decided to look at cards that are available in packs and boxes. The boxes simply display the card design on the front, and then offers the entire selection on the back, allowing the user to view what is inside.
