Teen Girl Liberation Army, Melanie, 1996
This zine includes all the aspects of the DIY aesthetic, from hand drawn type to cut out image and text. By looking at original zines like this, I can get a really understanding of how I can push my theory into a practical product. It is evident from the above images that greyscale, Courier typeface and colour limitation are all important aspects that should be included. Although the vast majority of images included in a zine will be black and white, in order to save on time and money, occasionally some zines do explore the possibility of a coloured front cover. This way, it can grab attention and stand out. The only colour that I will include within my own publication will therefore simply be my title pages.
Demirep zine 1996
When looking at original zines, sometimes it is actually quite hard to understand. As they follow a cut and stick method, many of the zines just include a whole load of random stuff that has been stuck down. You can often see little bits and pieces that managed to get into the photocopy, or you can imagine that many of the images are in fact just something fold lying around. Whilst, I want to make sure everything in my publication is relevant, I also want to explore the use of random objects. I will do this by include stickers, sequins and so on within the scans.
Jigsaw
The above zine has taken on quite a simplistic nature for the front cover, steering away from over crowding. There is the usual use of the Courier typeface, and you an see from the layout of the type that there is no need to worry about things being lined up or in the right place.
Riot Grrrl
An original Riot Grrrl zine that makes use of cartoon illustration and relevant image.
Bikini Kill
Original Bikini Kill zine pages that show evident use of the cut and stick method, as well as the Courier typeface. You can see from the images how many times they've probably been printed and photocopied by the grainy nature of the images. The aesthetics you get from this process really catches my attention. I am interested in the effects you can get from scan and print, and how you can build up an image using a selection of smaller images.
