JAMIE OLIVER - 15 minute meal app

15 Minute Meals

As well as the Jamie Oliver Recipes app, I also downloaded his 15 Minute Meals app for free. After use, I feel that not as much thought has gone into this app. It is quite simple in terms of how the recipes are presented, and they are just what you would find within a recipe book. They are not simplified down or put into separate steps like his other app. Despite this, the app still has some nice features, and it has a contemporary and clean design, making use of high quality digital photographs.

Start up screen

The app starts with a simple start of screen, which is an advertisement for Channel 4, the channel that Jamie's 15 Minute Meal's is aired on. It then takes you to the main home page which can be seen on the right. Use of high quality photographs of the meals, make them appear appetising, making you want to create them yourself.

The home page then tells you to scroll down for more details. As you scroll, the background slowly begins to black out, and a page of information can be viewed. You can then swipe across from left to right for more information on the programme itself.

Meal Cards

The next tab to click on is meals. This then shows you a selection of meal cards which can be viewed by scrolling up and down. The app is easy to navigate at this point, and the design is clean and simple.

Once a meal card has been selected, a photograph of the final meal appears, with a recipe below it, in the style of paper within a notepad.

Then, as you scroll down, the image becomes hidden and the recipe appears. Whilst the recipe has been simplified so that is is easy to view on screen, it is a lot more wordy than Jamie Oliver's other app, and all information is in one place. You need to keep scrolling down in order to keep reading, which is made quite difficult due to the small font size.

Book Scanner

The app then features a tab titled 'scan it', which I personally see as quite a pointless and unnecessary feature of the app. This book scanner only works when used alongside Jamie's 15 Minute Meal book, which may be a ploy to get you to buy it. It offers you the opportunity of getting hold of hidden extras, and is said to navigate you straight to the meal cards that were previously discuessed. In order to do this, you must go to this feature on the app, and use the camera that comes up to take a picture of a full page within the book. The app is then quite vague as to what happens next. It claims to be as easy as 1, 2, 3, however, I feel that it is a lot of effort to go through just to be taken to the specific meal card section of the app. It does show, however,  how a connection can be made between print and digital.
