THEORY TO PRACTICE - DIET

Describe (what is it?)
Interpret (what's it's function?)
Evaluate (how well is it looking?)
Theorise (does it solve the problem?)

DESCRIBE

The product that I aim to produce is an interactive publication focusing on fashion design house Meadham Kirchhoff. Within it are different pages that the audience can interact with - this may be pull tabs, stickers and/or posters. It's overall aesthetics are going to be girly and humorous with inspiration taken from feminist movements, Courtney Love and this whole idea of kitsch.

INTERPRET

The publication's function is to address the issue of kitsch being viewed as 'bad art'. Is it tacky and tasteless - or joyful and fun? It usually provokes disapproval, however the work of Meadham Kirchhoff is extremely ideas led, making numerous political stances regarding hyper femininity, hyper reality and the cosmology of women. Kitsch should be taken in good humour and not just be taken at face value. *Look at how decades in society impact design*

EVALUATE

Kitsch aesthetics are very big in the fashion industry - Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Markus Lupfer. Seen as a way of distracting everyone from the doom and gloom of the economic climate. It's fun to work with, and the inspirations behind their designs is intriguing. Already got really positive feedback regarding my illustrations - however interactions may be quite tricky.

THEORISING

Raises the issue of the debate. Makes you consider whether or not it is just bad art. Can it be good? So much meaning behind it still. Addresses the issue and raises awareness - kitsch is created in the fashion world - not just throwaway culture.
