POSTMODERNISM lecture

- purity

- seriousness

Postmodernism = binary opposites to above list

3. POSTMODERN CONDITION

- exhaustion
- pluralism
- pessimism
- disillusionment with the idea of absolute knowledge

BUT...some overlap
modernism:
expression of - modern life/tech/new materials/communication
post: 
reaction to - modern life etc

5. ORIGINS
-1917, German writer Rudolph Pannwitz 'p.mod men'
- 1960s beginning
- 1970s est. as a term (Jenoks)
- 1980s recognisable style
- today: tired and simmering

6. USES OF TERM
-after mod.
-historical era following the mod
-contra modernism
- equivalent to 'late capitalism' (Jameson)
- artistic and stylistic eclecticism
- 'global village' globalisation

7. THE LANGUAGE OF P.MOD ARCHITECTURE (1977)
- 15th July 1972, 3:32pm modernism dies (Charles Jencks)
- demolition of the Pruitt Igoe development, St Louis (bulldozed 4 yrs later) 


- utopia and technological determinism

8. P.mod has attitude of questioning conventions
- grand, make big statement
- reaction to rules
-starts as critique of international styles

- only rules? there are no rules!
- celebrates "kitsch"
